Five Years

Yesterday David and I celebrated our five year anniversary. We've never really celebrated an anniversary before because it just seemed a little silly (they're dating anniversaries, not wedding anniversaries), but we figured that five years is pretty awesome and that we wanted to do something special together. I told David that he had to plan our day together on his own, so he chose for us to go bike riding in Ann Arbor, get some delicious lunch, and catch the movie Boyhood playing in downton Ann Arbor. By the time we were done with lunch though, we were getting a little sleepy and decided to skip the movie and go eat ice cream instead before heading home to watch Before Sunrise (which is the same director, so we figured it was like we didn't skip it at all).

I love love love bike riding, so I was really happy that David chose that. Actually, he gave me two options to choose from which were bike riding and canoeing. When I was really young though, I was in a canoeing mishap that has pretty much scarred me for life and I'm still getting over it. The funny thing is, that mishap was pretty minor, but I'm just an anxious mess and I'm still a little nervous when I go canoeing. Next time though! Biking was so much fun because it was absolutely gorgeous outside. I think we ended up biking about three miles or so, which isn't very long when you're biking at all.

After we were done with biking, we were both pretty hungry so we headed to this French restaurant downtown that my sister suggested called Cafe Felix. David ordered a club sandwich with an egg on it and I got myself a fried egg, bacon, and cheese sandwhich with a giant side of delicious fries. That sandwhich sounds really lame, but it was sooo delicious and perfectly seasoned! I woud love to go there one day for a fancy dinner!

After lunch, we had plans to head over to Royal Oak to catch a different screening of our movie (our original plan was to go to the theater in Ann Arbor, but David wanted to stop at Michigan's largest pro-discing shop, so we would have missed the time for that showing). By the time we got there though, we were both a little sleepy and so we just decided to go get a quick ice cream bite and head back home. We went to our favorite ice cream shop in Rochester called Oberweiss and then went home for naps before watching our movie that night.

Also, on a last note, let's just talk about how LUCKY I am that I get to stare at this face for the rest of my life! He is dang handsome, is he not? Anyway, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Did you do anything fun? xoxo

 

A Picnic in the Park

The other day, David and I packed up a picnic of roasted tomatoes, marinated mozzerella balls, bruschetini, and blood orange San Pelegrinos. It was absolutely perfect outside, so we spread out our sheet under a shaded tree and snacked away. For dessert we brought Brussels (their Pepperidge Farm cookies and they're delicious!). I brought a candle, but there was too much of a breeze for it to even stay lit. If you're going out on a picnic, remember some plates, silverware, and napkins because they definitely come in handy!

frozen yogurt with momma

Thanks for being patient with me this week! I've been pretty exhausted lately between work and school. Today I had mouth surgery done, so I'm taking a little rest. Everything went great and I'm feeling good! Last night, my mom took me out for frozen yogurt because she's awesome and sweet and I was really nervous and we needed to hang out. We had a lot of fun together eating delicious frozen yogurt and driving around afterward just talking. She also took me to my appointment today and then came home to hang out and watch Frozen. She the best.

Now I'm gonna go pass out while David makes dinner for us (soup, because he's sweet).

anatomy of a sundae

I have the very best of friends. Ones that come over for dinner to celebrate a (very!) late Christmas and bring me flowers and everything needed for the best ice cream sundaes you can imagine. During a very long, hard, and pretty dang exhausting week, these are the kind of friends that are really needed in life. Needless to say, I had a blast with them last night as we exchanged Christmas gifts after dinner and then ate copious amounts of ice cream with every topping you could want (in order: cupcake hard shell, nuts, mini m&m's, hot fudge, rainbow sprinkles, in a waffle bowl).

mini ice cream sandwiches

Last night David & I had a little date night which included me skipping class, working out, then settling in for a good movie (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) and some homemade mini ice cream sandwiches. We love cookies and ice cream, but we just wanted something small, so I settled on mini sandwiches! They were delicious! Although, whenever you use your favorite cookie recipe and make them into something minature, they're bound to be wonderful. I combined them with some coffee ice cream because 1. that's what I had on hand and 2. it reminded me of my co-worker who loves eating something sweet with her coffee. They turned out delicious and the only reason I didn't eat more than two was because we had started the movie and I didn't want to interrupt. haha.

to make mini ice cream sandwiches:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teasponn baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt6 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted1/2 cup brown sugar1/4 cup white sugar1/2 Tablespoon vanilla extract1 egg1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (I used regular, mini would be great too)1 pint of your favorite ice cream

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees farenheit and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. In a medium bowl cream together the butter and both sugars until combined. Mix in the vanilla and egg. Slowly add the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips with a wooden spoon.

Scoop out 1/2 Tablespoon sized balls of dough onto the baking sheet about two inches apart. Bake for 10-13 minutes or until slightly browned at the edges. Slide onto a wire rack and cool for about 10-15 minutes. Scoop small ice cream mounds on one cookie and place another cookie on top. Press top cookie down until stuck together. Enjoy while watching a good movie.

With Valentine's Day coming up soon I thought I'd creat a list of some fun date-night ideas! This is especially for all those people that forget last minute (David and I don't really celebrate Valentine's day, but we do like date nights...and we also forget until last minute. haha.) For those of you celebrating this upcoming Friday, here are some ideas to have fun with:

 

1. Fondue Night: make some fondue together, whether it's a whole 3 course meal or just for dessert!

2. Dinner & a Movie: Pick out your favorite movie and make dinner together.

3. Have an indoor picnic: It's way too dang cold outside to have a picnic in the park, but lay out a blanket on your livingroom floor and enjoy a packed lunch/dinner. Open all the blinds for some extra sunshine.

4. Have a Treasure Hunt: David and I have done this for each other a couple of times. It's always soooo fun and probably have been my favorite dates. Make some clues for your better half and have them

5. Wander a Bookstore: walk around a bookstore and get a little lost together. Pick out one book each and buy it for each other (even if it's coming from the same bank account)

6. Have a Themed Night: pick a country and have a night themed around that. Think: cheese & wine while watching Amelie.

7. Explore Your City: Check out the musuems and the parks around your place and pretend you're a tourist.

8. Make a Bucket List: After making a bucket list together, cross off at least one thing that night.

9. Head to the Local Flower Shop: Pick out some flowers together to decorate your house with.

10. Start Driving: Take a weekend day and just start driving. Eventually you'll end up somewhere interesting. Maybe even take along an overnight bag in case you decide to stay for a night.

11. Go see some puppies: Head over to your local human society and pet some of the animals there. Maybe rescue one by taking it home!

12. Do Brunch & a Matinee: Date nights don't always have to start so late! David & I go to bed pretty early most nights (he's a teacher and I'm secretly an old lady)

13. Make a Fort: who says you have to be in elementary school to do this? Plus, it makes the perfect place to watch a few of your favorite shows

14. Head out on a Progressive Dinner: Have appetizers in one place, dinner in another, and end dessert at your favorite bakery or ice cream place.

date night

Last night David & I went on a surprise date night. Not that either of us suprised each other with a date, we mostly just decided it has been wayyyyy too long since we've been out to dinner at our favorite Thai place. We were both so happy that we finally had a date night together. We were supposed to have a date night last Friday, but it was a little screwy and we didn't really spend time with one another, which happens sometimes, especially when there are other things that need to be done. So last night I put on lipstick and spritzed some perfume on me and then we headed off to our favorite Thai place for the night and had a blast eating our favorite food and talking about our days and how lucky we are to have each other as friends. (p.s. if you live in Michigan, the restaurant is in Rochester and it's called Sukothai and is the best ever. Go there now).

a festival

Last weekend, David and I went to the Renaissance Festival in Holly, Michigan. It was David's first time there and he absolutely loved it, which I already knew he would. We always went with my mom when we were little and it was nice to go back and see everything. Of course, I threw David in the jail as a ceremonious ritual to it being the first time, but he turned right back around and got me thrown in too! What a little weasel! David and I had such a blast spending the day together in such a cool place. I can't wait to go back again next year with him!

Wolverine Fashion Night Out

Last Friday my sister and I went out to Grand Rapids for the night for the Wolviner Fashion Night Out. We had a blast meeting new (to us) Michigan bloggers. I feel so inspired and excited for my own blog after spending a whole night in a creative and fun environment. We spent the evening drinking wine and eating the most delicious appetizers (mini chicken n' biscuits with honey! mmmm!) and talking to everyone. I was thrilled to meet Tieka, Lena, Mel, Carisa, Alissa, Abigail, Leah, and Rachel just to name a few! I hope to keep in touch with everyone and stay blog friends and maybe meet up again soon!

Sundate

Yesterday morning David and I woke up early to take a trip out to the Armada Flea Market. It was the first time I've ever been there and I was so exctied! Personally, I don't think either of us were interested in the stuff they had, but we did really enjoy all the fruits and veggies that were for sale. The best part though, were the animals! Because Armada is pretty much farm country and most of the people there are, well, farmers so there were a lot of ducks, chickens, and bunnies for sale. Not to mention the few people that had the cutest little puppies for sale. I'm not a fan of small dogs really, but after holding that super cuddly boston terrier and pug mix, I was convinced I needed one. Unfortunatley, I didn't have a spare $350+ to shell out on the spot (which was probably a good thing cause I think my cats would kill me). I was also on the verge of bringing home one particularly fluffy and floppy-eared bunny. Even though I didn't get to go home with any animals, David and I did have fun. Needless to say it was one very VERY good Sundate.
