DIY Three-Step Floral Hair Clips

I've been growing my hair out recently and therefore I'm trying to find cute ways to wear it up and out of my face. I've bought a few headbands, but those are kind of hard to wear with glasses since there's double pressure in the same spot which means "ouch!". I remembered that I had this really cute floral clip from YEARS ago, but I had lost it in the move somewhere and haven't been able to find it, so I decided to make a few of my own!

Supplies You'll Need:

Fabric; something thin like silk or thin cottenMetal clip/pin combo, or your favorite type of hair clip (I like these cause you can use them on your clothes too)All-purpose glue (I use this because it dries clear)
Fabric Pinking scissors
Not pictured: regular scissors that are sharp enough to cut through fabric

Step One: Cut a strip of your fabric using the pinking scissors. I cut mine about 1 to 1/2 (depending on the layer I was doing, I went thinner as I went) wide and a few inches long. Cut slits every 1/4 inch to make the "petals".

Step Two: Put a big dot of glue onto the center of your clip. First put a corner down and hold, then fold the fabric onto itself as you continue to go around the clip to make a circle. Continue doing this will fabric until your flower is as thick as you would like it to be.

Step Three: cut a thinner and shorter strip of fabric (about 1/3 inch and 1 1/2 inches long) and put a thin line of glue at the bottom edge. Fold it onto itself to make the center of the flower (see bottom right picture above). Hold tightly while letting it dry, then glue it into the center of the flower, again, holding it in place for a minute while it dries.

Let dry completely and then you're all set! I made three clips: 1 teal, 1 orange, and 1 floral. I love sporting them this spring/summer! All in all, it only cost be about $13 to make (that's including the cost of the glue and scissors).

Let my start of by saying, I love my mom. She's incredible at a lot of things, like making people feel at home, making friends, and making lasagna. However, as hard as she tries, she's just not very good at taking pictures. My sister and I have tried to teach her, but nothing we say really helps the fact that she can't tell if a picture is in focus or not. With that being said, all I could think to myself while going through these poorly focused photos were, "I cannot wait until my sister moves back home." She's the only person I trust to take a good picture when I need it. Although David is a close second and still working his way up, I just miss having my sister around to help me out. Hopefully she just doesn't decide to stay out in Ann Arbor forever.

On a different note: my hair is red! Last weekend, while Amanda was in town, we drove out to Sally's and I pretty much randomly grabbed a hair color and we headed home to dye it. I was pretty shocked when I first washed out the dye and I definitely had thoughts about immedietly changing the color. It was so bright! The color has either calmed down a bit or I've just become used to it because now it doesn't seem that bad. In fact, I've become to grow on it and I think I really love the color. I've always wanted to dye my hair this color, but I've always been a little too chicken to do it, so I've just been pushed into it now! In these pictures, you can't really tell just how red it is, but it's definitely different than what I was used to.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in lower Michigan it started to (FINALLY!) warm up! The other day was so warm and mostly muggy, that I was able to get away with wearing a cut-off and still being warm! It was actually really fun to be dressed in summery-type clothes. Also, I've worked pretty hard on not only my body, but feeling comfortable in it and I felt empowered while wearing this shirt in a I-finally-feel-good-about-myself-after-twenty-years way. Of course, being Michigan, today is absolutely freezing outside with bitter wind that bites your nose. As long as it doesn't snow again and warms up soon, I'll be alright though. Having a really nice week weather-wise helped out a lot to get through the rest of this season. I can't wait until actual summer is here though!

how to make hair knots

This has been my go-to hairstyle for most work days lately. Since I work in the food industry, I always have to have my hair up, but I hate wearing the same-old ponytail. Now that my hair is longer, I've been able to style it more ways and this has been one of my favorites. It's so easy to do and it looks really cute! The first time I wore it like this, I got more compliments than I think I ever have in one work day! Not that it matters much, but it sure does feel nice. I also get a lot of, "you look like that girl from Star Wars," which the style looks nothing that Princess Leia's signature cinnamon buns. Here's how to do it!

1. It's best to start with your hair a little dirty. If it's just cleaned it's really hard to get the knots to stay pinned. Divide your hair in half. 2. Take one half and split it into halves again. 3. Tie these two halves together and continue to tie them together while going up towards the top of your head. 4. Once you've tied it all the way to the top of your head, pin it using at least two bobby pins. Do the same to the other side of your hair and pin it again. Use bobby pins to pin any fly-aways in your hair.

Ta-da! Easy as pie, right?
